Hiatus

Going on a short hiatus until I can get my stuff together and find someone to help run this little review blog with me. I'm sorry, but I have to practice for my band, get ready for this up-and-coming fall semester, tackle some yardwork, and other IRL things.

'Til then, pony on.

Into the Everfree

[Link to story here]

So there's a little backstory behind this fanfic as well, but it doesn't have to do with an author that can't handle criticism well. It has to do with a small experiment that FiMFiction pulled on their site, though. See, there was a group formed of twenty-five or so authors, under the name League of Extraordinary Gentlecolts (and one gentlefilly), who swapped stories with each other and basically did an experiment on Brand Loyalty.

See, this was under the guise of butterscotchsundae, an author more notorious for shipfics and more emotional pieces, so it makes sense in a way. She actually wrote the fanfic Fluttershy's-Infernal-Adventures, which was originally going to be called 'Fluttershy Goes to Hell', but that name was taken already. The actual author was Obselescence, who does more Comedy/Slice of Life stories with one or two Sad stories to boot. Don't you love all these hyperlinks that I'm throwing at you?

So how did Obselescence do? Find out after the break.

Celestia

[Link to story here]

This was a difficult story to review.

It fit all the guidelines for me to review it, so on paper it should've be entirely possible, given a few reads and some introspection afterwards, that I should've easily been able to sit myself down and type up a bunch of words, seeing as that's my job on this blog. So, what's kept me from giving a concise and more conventional review for this story? Did I even like this story? Find out after the break.

A Follow-Up To Birds Of A Feather

(AKA A post containing a reasonable explanation on why I can't review the sequel to my last review's fanfic.)

So I promised at the end of my review of Birds Of A Feather that I'd go over the sequel Flock Together. I'm not the kind of person that likes to let people down, but I'm afraid that Flock Together is unreviewable. This isn't because its extremely horrible or anything, but there is a legitimate reason, and some discussion about how it fairs with the original story, after the break.

Birds Of A Feather

[Link to story here]

So I'm just going to go ahead an throw the concept of this story right at you guys: Pipsqueak x Featherweight. I'm going to go ahead and get that out of the way, because if you're not okay with the idea of two young colts kissing, then this isn't the story for you.

Personally, I'm not into guys, but if there's a story, TV show, movie, etc. that shows two likable characters of the same gender in a relationship, I'll buy it. So how does this story fare? Find out after the break.

(By the way, its a "jump break" according to Blogger and not a "page break", so I just wanted to clear that up. The breaks here don't even really work like page breaks, actually, but I've been calling them page breaks because I knew what a page break was before I knew what a jump break was and was apparently too lazy to properly read or correct myself. Anywho...)

Discussion: Length and Complexity/Simplicity

I confess that I would have put up another review last night, but then this small event called the 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremonies happened and I got a tiny bit distracted. I'm also nothing short of scatter-brained sometimes and really need to work on that. Speaking of Olympics, that was a such great Paul McCartney performance, especially with all those people in London singing along to Hey Jude! It almost makes one forget about things like nationalism and xenophobia. I've also never seen so many Visa ads since the last Summer Olympics.

Anyway, now that some boring sport like Woman's Basketball is on, I have time to actually post something. (More after the break)

Derpy Submits a Story

[Link to story here]

Now that we're back on schedule, its about to get a bit rant-y up in here.

You see, there's a bit of backstory to this review, and I aim to do it not to attack any authors, but more to help them and possibly show people how to take criticism. More after the page break.

The Good Ship Lifestyle

[Link to Fanfic Here]

Shipping is a delicate subject in any fandom, not just for Bronies, and most of the time has people divided. For the most part, when people think of shipping, they tend to associate it more with fanfics, and with a million dedicated fanbases, there's enough shipping, especially on the internet, to make the US Postal Service blush. There's no real right or wrong answer to it, either. You have people that want that don't like the idea of two characters from a show or series that aren't romantically together canonically suddenly swapping spit, even outright abhorring the idea, and then you have those who argue amongst themselves over which character is best paired with whatever other character. You also have people who are right in the middle of this debacle that couldn't care less.

Today's fanfic is an affectionate parody of shipping in general, but particularly with those craaaazy people that come up with ship pairings like LunaxApplejack or DiscordxCheerilee. (At least one of those is real) Does this deserve a read, even from fans that outright disparage shipping? Short answer: Yes. Long answer: See for yourself after the page break.

Changeling

[Link to original story here]

Science Fiction can be a hard medium to write, but if you do it right, the result is very rewarding. With stories like Ender's Game, The Running Man, and 2001: A Space Oddessy, one can create a enduring a grand story with interesting worlds, spectacular technological advancements and gadgetry, and alien species which may or may not be humanoid enough to have intimate relations with. Even visual media has helped add to this wonderful genre with TV shows like Star Trek and Stargate SG-1 and movies such a Star Wars (which is technically 'Sci-Fi Fantasy') and a series of films our fanfic is based on: the Alien Franchise, specifically the first movie Alien.

So how do you mix Alien, a slasher film that takes place in a spaceship and contains lots of allegory for rape and sex, and mix it with My Little Pony? Simple: replace the word "alien" with "changeling". Seems good enough on paper, though how does the "Sci-Fi" element fair in this story? Not too well, unfortunately.

What is this place? [An Introductory Post]

In case you haven't noticed already, you're on a simple blog for reviewing fanfiction of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Why? A few reasons:
